India is preparing to host the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, with several major world leaders arriving in the capital. The summit comes at a particularly sensitive time because of continuing geopolitical tensions and the conflict involving Iran and Israel. Leaders from the expanded BRICS grouping are expected to discuss global governance, trade, investment, technology, food security and energy security.

The summit is also important because BRICS has expanded significantly in recent years, increasing its influence in global economic and political affairs. India is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation among member countries while also addressing disruptions to energy supplies and international trade.

Security arrangements in Delhi have been significantly increased ahead of the event. Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed, while traffic restrictions and security checkpoints have been introduced around important areas. Some government offices, schools and businesses are also affected by arrangements connected to the summit.

The presence of leaders from countries such as Russia, China and Iran makes the meeting especially significant for India’s foreign policy. Bilateral discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting leaders are also expected to receive considerable attention.

The outcome of the summit could influence discussions on international cooperation, energy security and the future direction of the BRICS grouping.
