India is preparing to host the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, with major world leaders expected to attend. The summit is attracting particular attention because of the participation expected from Russia and China, while international tensions have added importance to the meeting.

Around 30,000 security personnel have reportedly been deployed across Delhi ahead of the summit. Security arrangements are being strengthened around airports, hotels, roads and the Bharat Mandapam venue. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to arrive on September 11, while Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected on September 12, according to reports.

The summit comes at a sensitive time because of continuing tensions in West Asia and their potential impact on energy prices, trade and the global economy. India is also working with other BRICS members on a joint declaration that could address international cooperation, multilateralism, technology, energy and economic stability.

The meeting could also provide an opportunity for India and China to strengthen diplomatic communication. However, major differences remain in their economic relationship, including investment restrictions, technology access and trade concerns.

The BRICS summit is therefore expected to be one of India’s most significant international diplomatic events of 2026.
