Thiruvananthapuram, August 6: The Kerala Government has strongly opposed Tamil Nadu’s proposal to increase the water level of the Mullaperiyar Dam, reiterating its long-standing concerns over the safety of the century-old structure. The issue has once again intensified the inter-state dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with both governments maintaining differing positions on the dam’s operation and safety.
Kerala has expressed concern that raising the reservoir’s water level could increase the risk to millions of people living downstream in Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts, particularly during the ongoing monsoon season. The state government argues that the dam, constructed in 1895, has exceeded its intended lifespan and requires replacement with a modern structure capable of meeting current safety standards.
State officials have reiterated Kerala’s demand for the construction of a new dam, emphasizing that public safety should take precedence over water storage considerations. The government has maintained that while Kerala has no objection to Tamil Nadu receiving the agreed quantity of water for irrigation and drinking purposes, it believes the existing dam poses a potential risk because of its age and the region’s seismic activity.
Tamil Nadu, however, has maintained that the dam is structurally safe following extensive strengthening works carried out over the years. The state has argued that the Supreme Court has permitted the water level to be maintained at the approved limit and that the stored water is crucial for irrigation and drinking water supply in several districts of Tamil Nadu. Officials there insist that all operations are being conducted in accordance with judicial directions and recommendations from expert committees.
The latest development comes as heavy monsoon rains continue across Kerala, leading to rising water levels in reservoirs and rivers. Disaster management authorities are closely monitoring the Mullaperiyar reservoir and other major dams to ensure public safety and coordinate any necessary precautionary measures.
The Mullaperiyar issue has remained one of the most sensitive inter-state disputes between Kerala and Tamil Nadu for decades, balancing concerns over dam safety, water security, and legal obligations. With both states reaffirming their respective positions, the matter is expected to remain under close judicial and administrative scrutiny in the coming months.
