Kannur, August 5: Kerala is paying tribute to R. Rajesh, a flood rescue volunteer whose extraordinary act of courage has touched the hearts of people across the state. Rajesh lost his life while rescuing a stranded farmer from the swollen Kariangode River in Kannur during the ongoing monsoon floods. His selfless sacrifice has become a symbol of bravery and compassion amid one of Kerala’s most challenging flood emergencies.
According to officials, Rajesh was part of a volunteer rescue team assisting residents trapped by rising floodwaters after days of relentless rainfall. During the operation, he successfully reached a 61-year-old farmer who had been stranded in the fast-flowing river. Recognising that the elderly man was in immediate danger, Rajesh reportedly removed his own life jacket and placed it on the farmer to ensure he could safely reach the rescue boat.
Moments after saving the farmer, Rajesh was caught in the powerful current and swept away by the swollen river. Rescue personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services, local volunteers, and disaster response teams launched an extensive search operation despite difficult weather conditions. After several days of searching, his body was recovered, bringing a tragic end to the mission.
The incident has prompted an outpouring of grief and admiration from across Kerala.
