Iran is expected to receive an initial shipment of Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defense systems within the coming weeks, according to sources cited by Reuters on July 29, 2026. The reported deal could involve up to 400 launchers, in what would be a significant effort by Tehran to strengthen its short-range air defenses.
The systems reportedly include the QW-12 and FN-16 man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS). These weapons are designed to provide mobile protection against low-flying aircraft and drones, complementing larger, fixed air-defense systems. The reported deal is estimated at around $60–70 million.
The reported shipments come amid heightened tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Sources say the equipment could travel from Urumqi in China through Pakistan to Iran. China’s Foreign Ministry and Pakistani military sources have denied involvement in the reported arrangement.
The development could further deepen military ties between China and Iran while giving Tehran additional mobile capabilities to defend strategic sites against aerial threats.
