The UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting in Busan, South Korea, has announced a new list of cultural and natural sites receiving World Heritage status during its 48th session. The newly inscribed sites span Asia, Europe, and South America, recognizing places of outstanding cultural, historical, and environmental significance.
Among the most notable additions is Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, India, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. With this recognition, Sarnath becomes India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site, strengthening the country’s global cultural heritage presence and promoting international tourism and conservation efforts.
Other newly recognized sites include Brazil’s historic Amazonian theatres—the Theatro da Paz in Belém and the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus—which were honored for their architectural beauty and their role during the Amazon rubber boom. UNESCO also added Mount Olympus in Greece as a mixed cultural and natural heritage site, acknowledging both its ecological importance and its deep connection to ancient Greek mythology.
UNESCO officials stated that the new inscriptions aim to encourage sustainable tourism, strengthen conservation efforts, and preserve humanity’s shared heritage for future generations. The World Heritage Committee’s annual meeting continues through July 29 in Busan, where additional heritage conservation decisions are expected.
