Uganda has launched a major wildlife conservation initiative by relocating 12 endangered Nubian giraffes from Murchison Falls National Park to the Ajai Wildlife Reserve in northwestern Uganda. The operation aims to safeguard one of Africa’s rarest giraffe subspecies from increasing threats posed by oil exploration, habitat degradation, climate change, and human activities within the park.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is overseeing the complex translocation, during which veterinarians carefully sedate each giraffe before transporting it approximately 106 kilometers (65 miles) to its new habitat. Conservationists believe that establishing a separate population in Ajai Wildlife Reserve will reduce the risk of losing the species if environmental damage or other disasters affect Murchison Falls National Park, where nearly 40% of Uganda’s oil reserves are located. Oil drilling and related infrastructure development have intensified in recent years, raising concerns among environmental groups about their impact on wildlife and ecosystems.
The relocation is also part of a broader ecological restoration program for Ajai Wildlife Reserve, which suffered severe wildlife losses during the 1980s due to poaching and civil unrest. Alongside giraffes, species such as buffaloes, zebras, white rhinos, and Uganda kobs are being reintroduced to restore biodiversity and boost sustainable tourism. Local communities are expected to benefit through increased tourism income and conservation-related employment, strengthening support for wildlife protection.
Conservation experts consider the project an important example of balancing economic development with biodiversity protection. By creating new, secure habitats for endangered species, Uganda hopes to ensure the long-term survival of the Nubian giraffe while demonstrating that conservation and responsible development can coexist when carefully managed.
