Palakkad, July 14: A wave of pride and excitement has swept across Kerala’s Palakkad district as NASA astronaut Dr. Anil Menon, who traces his family roots to Ottapalam in Palakkad, prepares to embark on his first mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The launch aboard Russia’s Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft marks a historic milestone, making him the first astronaut of Kerala origin to travel into space.
Dr. Menon, a physician, engineer, and lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Space Force, is scheduled to spend approximately eight months aboard the ISS as part of Expedition 74/75. During the mission, he will conduct a wide range of scientific experiments focused on human health in microgravity, space medicine, advanced medical technologies, and preparations for future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars.
Residents of Ottapalam and nearby areas have expressed immense joy over Dr. Menon’s achievement. Schools, educational institutions, and science enthusiasts have described his journey as a source of inspiration for students across Kerala. Community leaders noted that his success demonstrates how dedication to science, education, and innovation can lead to global accomplishments.
Palakkad now enjoys a unique place in India’s space story. Besides Dr. Anil Menon, the district is also linked to Air Commodore Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, one of ISRO’s Gaganyaan astronaut-designates, and Anna Menon, who flew on the SpaceX Polaris Dawn mission and is now associated with NASA’s astronaut programme. This rare connection has earned Palakkad recognition as a district with remarkable ties to international and Indian space exploration.
In a recent interaction, Dr. Menon said he looks forward to seeing the Kerala coastline and India’s lush landscape from orbit. He also expressed gratitude for the encouragement and good wishes he has received from people in Kerala, adding that he hopes his journey will inspire young students to dream big and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and medicine.
As preparations for the launch enter their final stage, celebrations continue across Palakkad. Educational institutions are planning special events to mark the mission, while many students are expected to watch the launch live. Dr. Menon’s mission is being celebrated not only as a personal achievement but also as a proud moment for Kerala and India, highlighting the growing contribution of people of Indian origin to global space exploration.
