A fast-moving wildfire in Spain’s southeastern Almería province has become one of the country’s deadliest wildfires in recent years. Officials have confirmed at least 12 deaths, while 23 people remain missing as emergency crews continue search and rescue operations.
The blaze began near Los Gallardos and spread rapidly toward nearby communities, fueled by extreme heat, strong winds, and dry vegetation. Many victims were trapped in their vehicles or while attempting to escape, despite authorities advising residents to shelter in place. More than 800 people have been evacuated, and over 150 firefighters, supported by military emergency units, are battling the flames.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged full support for the emergency response. Authorities are investigating the cause of the wildfire, with early reports suggesting a possible downed power line, though the investigation is still ongoing.
