Bengaluru, July 4: In a major step toward conserving water resources, the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has directed all households, apartment complexes, commercial establishments, hotels, offices, and institutions in the city to install water-saving aerators on taps and fixtures by July 31. The move is part of the city’s broader strategy to promote efficient water use and prepare for future water shortages.
According to BWSSB officials, water-saving aerators can significantly reduce water consumption by regulating the flow of water without affecting its usability. Authorities believe the widespread installation of these devices will help conserve millions of litres of water every day while encouraging responsible consumption across Bengaluru.
As part of the conservation measures, the water board has also prohibited the use of treated drinking water for non-essential activities such as filling swimming pools, washing vehicles with potable water, decorative fountains, and other avoidable uses. Officials stated that these restrictions are necessary to ensure the availability of drinking water for domestic and essential purposes, particularly during periods of increased demand.
The BWSSB has warned that individuals and businesses failing to comply with the new regulations may face penalties under the applicable water conservation rules. Inspection teams will conduct regular checks after the deadline to verify compliance, and notices may be issued to establishments found violating the guidelines.
Officials have urged residents to adopt additional water-saving practices, including repairing leaking taps and pipelines, harvesting rainwater, recycling treated wastewater where possible, and avoiding unnecessary wastage in homes and workplaces.
The initiative comes as Bengaluru continues to experience rapid urban growth and increasing pressure on its water resources. Authorities believe that combining infrastructure improvements with responsible public participation is essential to ensuring a sustainable water supply for the city.
The BWSSB has appealed to citizens to support the conservation drive by complying with the new directives and making water-efficient practices a part of their daily routine. Officials emphasized that every litre of water saved today will contribute to securing Bengaluru’s long-term water security and environmental sustainability.
