Tourist vehicle operators across Kerala have implemented a fare hike following a revision announced by the Contract Carriage Operators Association. The increase affects tourist taxis, tempo travellers, mini buses, and contract carriage buses commonly used for tours, pilgrimages, weddings, corporate trips, and group travel. The revised rates came into effect amid rising operational expenses faced by vehicle owners and tour operators.
According to industry representatives, the decision was driven by a sharp increase in fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, insurance premiums, permit charges, road taxes, and spare-part expenses. Operators stated that operating costs have risen significantly over the past year, making it difficult to continue services at existing fare levels.
The fare revision is expected to impact both domestic tourists and local travelers who rely on contract vehicles for leisure trips and special events. Travel agencies and tour organizers have noted that package costs may increase slightly as transportation forms a major component of overall tour expenses.
Industry leaders emphasized that the revision was necessary to ensure the financial sustainability of tourist transport services. Many operators have reportedly been struggling with higher loan repayments, maintenance expenses, and operational overheads while attempting to maintain service quality and safety standards.
Tourism stakeholders expressed concern that higher transport costs could affect travel budgets, particularly during the ongoing monsoon tourism season. However, operators argued that the increase remains moderate compared to the overall rise in operating expenses and is essential for the continued viability of the sector.
Kerala’s tourism industry continues to be a major contributor to the state’s economy, with destinations such as Kochi, Munnar, Alappuzha, Thekkady, and Wayanad attracting large numbers of visitors throughout the year. Transport operators play a crucial role in connecting tourists to these destinations and supporting the broader tourism ecosystem.
Industry associations have also called for government support measures, including tax relief and operational assistance, to help balance rising costs without placing excessive burdens on travelers.
