The National Highways Authority of India has approved an additional ₹160 crore for the development of the Kochi–Munnar National Highway 85 project, providing a major boost to one of Kerala’s important road infrastructure initiatives. The new funding is expected to accelerate ongoing construction activities and improve connectivity between Kochi and the hill tourism destination of Munnar.
Officials stated that the additional allocation will mainly support land acquisition, road widening, drainage construction, retaining wall works, and safety improvements along critical stretches of the highway. The project is considered vital for reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion, and improving road safety for both residents and tourists.
National Highway 85 connects Ernakulam district with the high-range regions of Idukki and serves as a major route for tourism, trade, and transportation. The road is heavily used by travelers visiting Munnar, one of Kerala’s most popular tourist destinations known for its tea plantations and hill stations. However, several stretches of the highway currently face issues including narrow roads, landslide-prone areas, traffic bottlenecks, and damaged sections during heavy rainfall.
Authorities believe the additional funding will help fast-track pending works and strengthen infrastructure ahead of future traffic growth. Improved connectivity is also expected to benefit local businesses, tourism operators, and agricultural transportation in the region.
Local residents and business groups welcomed the announcement, stating that better road infrastructure would improve economic activity and make travel safer during the monsoon season. Tourism stakeholders also expressed hope that smoother road conditions would encourage more domestic and interstate visitors to Munnar and nearby destinations.
Meanwhile, officials from the highway department said monitoring and coordination efforts would be intensified to ensure timely completion of the project. Environmental safety measures and slope protection works are also expected to be prioritized due to the highway’s hilly terrain.
The latest approval marks another major step in Kerala’s ongoing infrastructure development plans aimed at strengthening transportation networks and supporting regional economic growth.
