A major political transformation has unfolded in Wales after Plaid Cymru emerged as the largest party in the 2026 Senedd election, ending decades of dominance by the Labour Party in Welsh politics.
The election marked the first time since Welsh devolution began in 1999 that Labour failed to remain the largest political force in Wales. Under leader Rhun ap Iorwerth, Plaid Cymru secured 43 seats in the expanded 96-member Senedd, narrowly missing an outright majority.
Analysts described the result as a “historic realignment” of Welsh politics. Labour suffered one of its worst performances in modern Welsh electoral history, while Reform UK Wales rose sharply to become the second-largest party and official opposition in the Senedd.
