Bengaluru witnessed intense rainfall and thunderstorms this week, causing severe waterlogging, traffic congestion, and disruptions across multiple parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and several districts in Karnataka, warning residents about continued heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds over the next few days.

Several low-lying areas reported flooded roads, stalled vehicles, and long traffic delays during peak office hours. Commuters faced major difficulties as rainwater accumulated on key roads and underpasses. Areas near tech corridors and busy junctions experienced especially slow traffic movement, with many people stranded for hours while returning home. Flight schedules were also affected due to poor weather conditions and reduced visibility. Airlines issued advisories warning passengers about possible delays and disruptions.

The rainfall once again exposed Bengaluru’s long-standing drainage and infrastructure challenges. Urban experts say rapid urbanization, shrinking lakes, and excessive concretization have weakened the city’s ability to absorb rainwater naturally. Studies referenced in recent urban reports suggest Bengaluru has lost a large percentage of its green cover over the last few decades, increasing flood risks significantly.

Alongside flooding concerns, authorities have also warned citizens about safety risks from damaged electrical cables and hanging wires during rainy conditions. Civic activists are demanding better underground cabling systems, improved drainage maintenance, and stronger monsoon preparedness measures from local authorities.

BBMP teams and emergency personnel were deployed in several areas to clear blocked drains, remove fallen branches, and manage traffic. However, many residents criticized the repeated flooding incidents, arguing that Bengaluru continues facing the same civic problems every monsoon season despite ongoing infrastructure spending.

Weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and stay updated with official alerts as unstable weather conditions are expected to continue in the coming days.
