The Congress party has officially announced senior leader V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala following the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) decisive victory in the Assembly elections. The announcement comes after days of internal discussions and consultations among senior Congress leaders and alliance representatives.
Satheesan, who served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, emerged as the consensus choice during the Congress Legislature Party meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram. Party leaders stated that his leadership experience, organizational strength, and strong public image played a major role in the decision.
The UDF’s victory marked a major political shift in Kerala, ending the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government’s tenure. Supporters across the state celebrated the announcement, with party offices witnessing large gatherings and celebrations soon after the official confirmation.
In his first response after being chosen, Satheesan thanked party workers, alliance leaders, and the people of Kerala for their trust and support. He emphasized that the new government would focus on development, employment generation, infrastructure improvement, welfare initiatives, and transparent governance.
Senior Congress leadership described the decision as the beginning of a “new chapter” for Kerala politics, highlighting the party’s commitment to stability and inclusive administration. Discussions regarding cabinet formation and allocation of ministerial portfolios are expected to begin immediately.
Political analysts believe Satheesan’s appointment could significantly influence Kerala’s political direction in the coming years, especially among younger voters and urban constituencies. The official swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place soon after the completion of government formation procedures.
With the leadership decision now finalized, attention has shifted toward the formation of the new cabinet and the policy priorities of the incoming UDF government.
