Several suburban areas of Chennai have recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C as an intense heatwave grips the region, raising concerns over public health and water availability.
According to the India Meteorological Department, temperatures in parts of the city’s outskirts have surged 3–5°C above normal, driven by dry winds and clear skies. Localities such as Tambaram, Avadi, and Red Hills reported some of the highest readings, with officials warning that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist over the coming days.
Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heatstroke. Hospitals have reported a slight increase in cases of fatigue and heat exhaustion, particularly among the elderly and outdoor workers.
The ongoing heatwave has also put pressure on water resources, with rising demand leading to concerns over supply in several suburban neighborhoods. Power consumption has spiked as residents rely heavily on cooling systems, adding strain to the electricity grid.
Weather experts indicate that relief may only arrive with the onset of pre-monsoon showers, though no immediate change in conditions is expected. Meanwhile, civic authorities continue to monitor the situation and prepare contingency measures to manage the impact of extreme temperatures.
