Chennai, India — A 58-year-old woman died after being run over by a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus in the Otteri neighbourhood of Chennai on Saturday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Rani, a resident of VV Koil Street in Kosapet, Otteri. The tragic incident occurred near the TB Hospital bus stop on Konnur High Road while she was attempting to cross the busy road, according to authorities.

Passersby immediately rushed to her aid and alerted nearby commuters and police. Personnel from the Pulianthope Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW) responded to the scene and shifted her to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. Eyewitnesses said the bus did not stop in time, and Rani sustained fatal injuries in the collision.

The bus driver has been detained by police pending further investigation, and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act. Police officials are examining traffic footage and questioning witnesses to determine the exact sequence of events and whether negligence or speeding played a role in the fatal crash.
