A Kochi resident has fallen victim to an online organ-donation scam, losing ₹90,000 after being promised financial compensation for donating a kidney. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the fraudsters involved.
According to officials, the woman came across an online advertisement offering monetary benefits for organ donation. After initiating contact, she was persuaded through phone calls and messages that the process was legal and medically supervised.
The accused allegedly demanded multiple payments under the pretext of registration fees, medical tests, and legal clearances. Trusting the assurances given, the victim transferred money in several installments before realizing she had been cheated.
When the promised procedures failed to materialize and communication stopped, the woman approached the police. Investigators believe the scam is part of a larger racket targeting financially vulnerable individuals through social media and messaging platforms.
Police have warned the public that organ donation in India is strictly regulated and that buying or selling organs is illegal. Authorities stressed that any demand for money in exchange for organ donation is a clear sign of fraud.
Cybercrime officials are examining bank transactions and digital communication records to identify the perpetrators. Similar complaints have been reported in recent months, indicating a rising trend of health-related scams.
Residents have been urged to verify information through official channels and report suspicious offers immediately. Police also plan to conduct awareness campaigns to educate the public about online fraud and organ-donation laws.
