Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has highlighted a significant increase in rail budget allocations for Kerala in the Union Budget 2026-27, underlining the Centre’s commitment to strengthening the state’s rail infrastructure and connectivity. Addressing the media after the budget presentation, Vaishnaw revealed that Kerala has been allotted ₹3,795 crore for railway development this year, marking a substantial rise compared with average allocations in earlier years.
The minister said this enhanced funding reflects a decade-long focus on expanding rail infrastructure in the state. Projects worth around ₹18,000 crore are currently underway, covering key areas such as station modernisation, network expansion and safety enhancement. Kerala has already completed 100 % electrification of its rail network and added 125 km of new tracks, improving links within the state and with neighbouring regions. {{cite web0search18}}
A major thrust of the ongoing work includes the redevelopment of 35 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Programme, aimed at improving passenger comfort, amenities and accessibility at key junctions. Several stations, including Vadakara and Chirayinkeezh, are already operational with upgraded facilities.
Vaishnaw also reaffirmed progress on several capacity-enhancing projects in Kerala, such as third and fourth line surveys between critical corridors and ongoing works on new alignments, though specific timelines for completion were not disclosed. He defended the allocations, noting that Kerala’s share is part of a broader nationwide acceleration of rail infrastructure spending and modernisation.
Despite optimism on funding, some proposals — including a dedicated high-speed rail corridor for Kerala — were not included in the budget’s list of newly announced corridors, drawing reactions from state leaders and transport experts.
Overall, Vaishnaw said the enhanced allocation and ongoing works mark a turning point for rail-led growth in Kerala, with emphasis on connectivity, safety, modern services and future-ready infrastructure.
