In Mistissini, a remote Cree First Nation community in northern Quebec, Canada, authorities confirmed that two men in their 30s were fatally shot in a late-night shooting incident, but police have said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Wednesday when officers responding to reports of gunfire found the victims inside a vehicle on a community street, a spokesperson for the Quebec provincial police said.

Provincial police and the Eeyou Eenou Police Force are investigating the slayings, which officials believe may be linked to organized crime or the drug trade, rather than a random act of violence, Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu said Thursday.

Earlier, the Cree Nation of Mistissini had placed the community under lockdown after initial reports of multiple fatalities, with leaders urging residents to remain indoors as investigators secured the area. Chief Michael Petawabano later said the lockdown would be lifted once police confirmed it was safe to resume normal activities, stressing there was no active shooter or further danger to residents.

Authorities have not yet made any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing as law enforcement works to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack. News as reported
