A recent traffic report by the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has drawn attention to the high number of delivery agents involved in road accidents in 2025, with officials revealing that 43 delivery personnel were in crashes across the city last year, resulting in four deaths and numerous injuries, authorities said at a road safety programme this week. The statistics were shared during a safety awareness drive focused on women gig workers from food and parcel delivery services who regularly navigate busy traffic conditions in the city.

According to police, the primary causes of these accidents included overspeeding, mobile phone use while riding, signal violations, and not fastening helmets properly — factors that significantly increase the risk of serious injuries. Officials stressed that wearing helmets correctly and strict adherence to traffic laws are essential to improving safety among delivery riders. The awareness event also saw discussions on helmet usage and responsible riding, as well as distribution of safety gear to participants.

GCTP representatives highlighted that delivery agents face pressures from tight deadlines and heavy urban traffic, making road safety training and outreach a priority for protecting gig workers and reducing preventable crashes going forward.
