Chennai — The Greater Chennai Traffic Police have intensified night patrol operations across the city as part of a renewed effort to improve road safety and reduce accidents caused by speeding, drunken driving, and reckless behaviour on late-night roads. Police officials said additional patrol teams and mobile check posts have been deployed at major junctions, highways, and accident-prone stretches during late evening and early morning hours.
The special night patrols focus on monitoring high-risk offences such as driving under the influence of alcohol, overspeeding, helmetless riding, and illegal street racing, which are considered major contributors to road fatalities. Authorities said stricter enforcement and regular vehicle checks are being conducted to deter violators and ensure compliance with traffic rules.
According to police officials, Chennai has recorded dozens of road accidents each month in recent years, prompting authorities to strengthen patrolling and enforcement measures. Increased patrol presence, supported by speed radar systems and surveillance cameras, has helped improve response times and promote safer driving practices across the city.
Night patrol teams are also stationed along busy stretches including city highways, beach roads, and commercial zones where late-night traffic is common. Officers are conducting breathalyser tests, issuing spot fines, and impounding vehicles involved in serious violations.
Officials say the intensified patrol initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce accidents, protect pedestrians and motorists, and ensure safer roads for residents and visitors across Chennai, news as reported.
