Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala — New official data shows that while the number of deaths from road accidents in Thiruvananthapuram district has declined over recent years, the number of grievous injuries has risen sharply, raising alarm among traffic authorities and public health experts. Between 2022 and 2025, road accident fatalities in the city fell from 171 to 144, and in rural parts of the district from 373 to 303, largely credited to better trauma care, faster emergency response times and stricter enforcement of safety measures such as helmet and seat-belt use.
However, despite the reduction in deaths, the total number of road accidents increased — from 1,825 to 2,500 in urban areas and from 3,260 to 3,545 in surrounding rural regions — and grievous injuries rose markedly. Urban grievous injury cases grew from 1,422 to 1,977, while rural areas saw an increase from 2,622 to 2,995 during the same period.
Experts warn that this trend highlights deeper road safety issues that extend beyond fatalities. Health economist Godwin S K noted that grievously injured victims often face long-term medical treatment, loss of income and heavy financial burdens for families — impacts that may not be immediately apparent in fatality figures alone. The average cost of hospitalisation for severe injuries can range from ₹30,000 to ₹1 lakh or more, placing significant strain on middle and lower-income households.
Traffic officials pointed to unsafe driving behaviours, including rash and drunk driving, as the predominant causes behind these serious injuries, estimating such actions were involved in nearly 80 % of grievous cases.
The contrasting trends — fewer deaths but more severe injuries — have drawn calls for enhanced road safety campaigns and stricter enforcement, along with targeted measures to protect vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. With accident rates rising alongside injuries, policymakers are under pressure to develop comprehensive strategies that reduce the overall human and economic toll of road crashes in Thiruvananthapuram.
