The Tamil Nadu government has announced the operation of hundreds of special buses from Chennai to various districts across the state to manage the heavy passenger rush expected during the weekend travel period. The additional services are being operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) in addition to the regular bus schedules.
Transport officials said the majority of the special services will depart from the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, one of the main intercity bus hubs serving southern routes from the city. Around 310 special buses are scheduled to run on Friday, while about 325 buses will operate on Saturday to accommodate the increased number of passengers traveling to their hometowns.
The buses will connect Chennai with major destinations including Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Tirunelveli, Erode, and Kanyakumari. Additional services are also planned from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus to destinations such as Hosur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvannamalai, Velankanni, and Bengaluru to ease travel demand.
Authorities have also arranged extra services from other cities like Bengaluru, Tiruppur, Erode, and Coimbatore to support passenger movement across the state. In addition, around 20 special buses will operate from Madhavaram in Chennai to handle additional demand during the weekend.
Transport officials said advance reservations indicate strong demand for the services, with thousands of passengers already booking tickets for travel between Friday and Sunday. More buses may be deployed depending on passenger demand, especially for return journeys to Chennai after the weekend.
The move aims to reduce overcrowding at bus terminals and ensure smoother travel for people heading to their hometowns during the busy weekend period. News as Reported.
