The Kerala state cabinet on January 14, 2026, approved a significant decision to allocate land for the establishment of memorial institutes honoring two influential political leaders — the late K. M. Mani and Kodiyeri Balakrishnan — in separate locations across the state. The move was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and reflects ongoing efforts to preserve the legacy and contributions of these senior figures through institutional initiatives.
For the K. M. Mani Memorial Institute for Social Transformation, the cabinet cleared the lease of 25 cents of government land at Kowdiar in Thiruvananthapuram to the K. M. Mani Foundation. This land will be leased for 30 years at a nominal rate, and the institute is expected to function as a centre for research and discourse on social and political transformation, drawing on Mani’s long career in public service and finance. Mani, a former finance minister and founder of Kerala Congress (M), was a towering figure in state politics for decades.
In Thalassery, Kannur district, the cabinet also approved the lease of 1.139 acres of land at Vadikkakathu to the Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Memorial Academy of Social Sciences for establishing the Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Memorial Study and Research Centre. Balakrishnan, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a former state home minister, is remembered for his role in legislative and party leadership. This centre aims to support academic research and discussions on social sciences, public policy and governance.
Both leases are structured over 30 years at a nominal annual rate of ₹100 per are, reflecting government support for long-term institutional development of these memorials. The decision comes amid ongoing political discussions in the state, including debates around party alignments and preparations for future elections, highlighting the symbolic and practical importance of such memorials in Kerala’s political landscape.
