Chennai: In response to ongoing redevelopment work at Chennai Egmore railway station, Southern Railway has introduced additional EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) shuttle services to help reduce disruption for suburban commuters. Platforms 10 and 11 at Egmore are currently blocked for infrastructure upgrades, prompting a temporary revision of the suburban train timetable and redeployment of resources.
Under the revised arrangements, shuttle EMU services are being operated between Chennai Egmore or St Thomas Mount and Guduvancheri or Chengalpattu, offering alternate connectivity for passengers affected by the reduced services on the core Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu corridor. Southern Railway has also provided additional stoppages for fast and semi-fast EMU services at key interchange points such as St Thomas Mount to enhance commuter options.
The changes come amid a 45-day block period, during which non-peak hour AC EMU services between Chennai Beach and Tambaram are temporarily cancelled on weekdays, and Sunday AC services are suspended, according to railway officials. Commuters have been advised to check the revised timetable and plan their journeys accordingly as the station redevelopment progresses.
Southern Railway’s contingency shuttle operations are aimed at easing passenger inconvenience and maintaining suburban connectivity while critical infrastructure upgrades continue — News as reported.
