Meteorologists say the high-pressure system traps warm air near the surface, allowing temperatures to rise significantly above seasonal averages for extended periods.
Researchers explain that rapid warming caused by the heat dome can lead to earlier and faster melting of snowpack in mountain ranges such as the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. These snowpacks act as natural water reservoirs, slowly releasing water into rivers and reservoirs during spring and summer. If the snow melts too quickly, much of the water may run off earlier than expected, reducing water availability later in the year.
