In the days following the killing of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) during a Mexican military operation in Jalisco, attention has turned to potential successors as the cartel grapples with a power vacuum. Juan Carlos Valencia González, a California-born stepson of El Mencho with dual U.S.–Mexican citizenship and indicted on drug trafficking and firearms charges, is now widely reported as the leading contender to assume control of the vast cartel network worth an estimated $20 billion.

Valencia González, also known by the alias “El Pelón”, was reportedly a senior figure in CJNG operations and is now the focus of law enforcement attention, with U.S. authorities offering up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest. Analysts say his ascension could reshape cartel dynamics, though some experts caution that internal rivalries among commanders and rival factions may challenge his claim to leadership and potentially trigger further violence.

El Mencho’s death in a security operation has already prompted cartels to retaliate with road blockades and arson in multiple Mexican states, underscoring concerns that a leadership transition could fuel unrest and complicate efforts to curb organized crime.
