A retired High Court employee was taken into custody by Kochi police on Wednesday evening in connection with the murder of a woman near the busy Vyttila junction in Kochi. The arrest follows intensive investigation over the last 48 hours, after the woman’s body was found with multiple injuries under suspicious circumstances.
According to police, the victim — whose identity has not been officially released — was discovered by passersby near the Vyttila area late Monday night. Initial enquiries indicated she had suffered severe trauma, prompting swift forensic analysis and CCTV reviews from nearby cameras. Investigators were able to trace suspicious movements that ultimately led them to the 60-year-old retired High Court employee, who had been residing in the city for several years.
Law enforcement officials stated that the suspect was arrested at his residence following evidence that linked him to the scene, including mobile phone location data and witness statements. During questioning, the suspect reportedly “did not provide a satisfactory explanation” regarding his whereabouts and activities on the night of the incident, according to a senior police officer involved in the case.
The motive remains unclear at this stage, and police have not ruled out possibilities including personal disputes or a chance encounter. Investigators have seized the suspect’s electronic devices and are conducting further forensic checks to establish a clearer sequence of events. A formal murder charge has been registered, and the accused is expected to be produced in court within the next 24 hours.
Local residents expressed shock after learning of the arrest, noting that the area around Vyttila, one of Kochi’s busiest transport hubs, is usually crowded even late at night. “It’s disturbing that such a crime could occur here,” said one commuter.
The police have appealed to anyone with additional information or footage from the night in question to come forward to assist with the probe. The case continues to develop as further investigations are carried out.
