Concerns about electricity supply in Bengaluru have emerged after the Yelahanka Gas Power Plant in North Bengaluru stopped operations due to a halt in natural gas supply. The plant has been an important source of power for the city, especially during periods of high electricity demand.

Officials said the shutdown occurred after the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) suspended gas supply to the plant. The decision was reportedly influenced by supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions affecting energy markets. As a result, the plant has ceased generating electricity, raising concerns about potential shortages in the city.

The Yelahanka plant had been producing around 370 megawatts of electricity daily and played a key role in managing peak demand in Bengaluru, particularly during the summer months. Since September 2024, it has contributed significantly to the city’s energy supply and helped stabilize the power grid.

However, state officials have assured residents that immediate disruptions are unlikely. Authorities have arranged alternative energy sources, including electricity from thermal, hydel, and renewable plants across Karnataka. The government has also initiated energy-sharing agreements with other states such as Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to ensure adequate supply.

Energy department officials stated that these measures should prevent major power outages in the city despite the plant shutdown. Nevertheless, experts warn that Bengaluru’s growing population and rapid urban expansion are increasing electricity demand every year.

Authorities are now closely monitoring the situation and exploring options to restore gas supply or increase power generation from other sources. The government has urged citizens to use electricity responsibly while the situation is being managed.
