A fresh political controversy has erupted in Kerala after Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi made outspoken remarks regarding the long-pending issue of establishing an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state. Speaking at a public meeting titled “Developed Tripunithura” in Kochi, Gopi reiterated the Centre’s intention to bring an AIIMS to Kerala but used objectionable language while dismissing critics who doubted the plan’s feasibility, triggering strong responses from opposition parties.
During the event, Gopi insisted that an AIIMS facility “will come to Kerala” and claimed discussions were underway to decide between two potential districts, with Alappuzha being his preferred choice due to its perceived developmental neglect. He added that if Alappuzha were not feasible, Thrissur could be considered next. His remarks — which included casual cuss words without naming any group explicitly — sparked backlash from political rivals and civil society groups.
The controversy has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, who accused the minister of undermining Kerala’s established demand for AIIMS and of trivialising a serious public health issue with inappropriate language. Kerala’s left-leaning parties in particular pointed out that the state government has already identified land in Kozhikode for the institute and has repeatedly communicated this to the Union government.
Senior BJP leaders in Kerala later clarified that Gopi’s comments were his personal opinion regarding the preferred site, and that the decision on the AIIMS location ultimately rests with the Union government based on established criteria. They emphasised that the party supports the broader goal of bringing AIIMS to Kerala, regardless of district.
The episode has reignited public debate over the distribution of central projects, with healthcare activists and local political leaders renewing calls for transparency and speedy implementation of tertiary medical facilities in the state.
