Kochi police are investigating the unnatural death of an 18-year-old youth, Abhinav, who was found with a fatal neck injury at a house in Nedumbassery on Thursday afternoon. The teenager, a resident of Puthur in Thrissur district, was working as a plumber at the site when his colleagues discovered him with a deep cut to the neck caused by a mechanised cutter upon returning from a tea break. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Abhinav succumbed to his injuries, prompting police to register a case of unnatural death and launch a detailed probe.

Authorities have confirmed that initial inquiries suggest the absence of any third person at the scene, which has led investigators to focus on suicide and accidental death as the two main possibilities. A senior police officer noted that a murder charge currently appears less likely due to the lack of evidence indicating external involvement at the time of the incident. However, the investigation remains open, and all angles will continue to be examined until clear conclusions can be drawn.

The police team is analysing at the work environment, the tools involved, and witness accounts to understand what exactly transpired in the moments before the tragedy. Forensic experts have been called in to inspect the mechanised cutter and the surrounding area, while colleagues and family members are being questioned for any additional insights. After conducting an autopsy on Friday, Abhinav’s body was handed over to his relatives for final rites.

The incident has raised concerns about worker safety and supervision at informal job sites, especially where heavy or industrial equipment is used without strict oversight or protective measures. Police say that once the probe concludes, they will determine whether workplace safety protocols were followed and if any negligence played a role in the fatal injury.
