Chennai, India — City police successfully stopped an attempted protest march by demonstrators heading toward the US Consulate General in Chennai on Sunday, detaining about 200 participants before they could reach the diplomatic mission. The protest was organised by members of the Tamil Nadu Shia Muslim Jamath and allied groups to condemn the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint United States–Israel military operation. Protesters, many dressed in black and carrying placards, marched from the Royapettah area chanting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans, and sought to advance along Anna Salai toward the consulate. Law enforcement had placed heavy security around the consulate, deploying more than 250 officers and erecting barriers to prevent unauthorised access. Police stopped the march a short distance from the consulate gate and detained demonstrators, taking them into temporary custody in nearby community halls to maintain public order and protect the sensitive diplomatic zone. Traffic along Peters Road was briefly disrupted during the confrontation. Organisers, including leaders from several regional parties, have signalled plans for further statewide protests on March 3.News as reported.
