The Philippine government and local authorities have temporarily closed two of Leyte’s most popular island destinations—Kalanggaman Island in Palompon and Canigao Island in Matalom—to allow annual environmental rehabilitation and conservation activities. The scheduled closures are part of a long-term strategy to protect the islands’ fragile coastal and marine ecosystems while promoting sustainable tourism.
Canigao Island will remain closed from 1–15 July 2026, reopening on 16 July, while Kalanggaman Island will be closed from 5–11 July 2026 under Palompon’s annual “Island Holiday” program. During these periods, tourist visits, overnight stays, and most commercial activities will be suspended to minimize human impact on the environment.
Rehabilitation efforts will include beach clean-up drives, marine habitat restoration, coastal ecosystem monitoring, maintenance of tourism facilities, and biodiversity conservation programs. Local governments are also encouraging environmental groups and volunteers to participate in conservation activities, reinforcing community involvement in protecting these natural treasures.
Officials emphasized that the temporary closures are essential for preserving the islands’ pristine white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and rich marine biodiversity. By giving nature time to recover from continuous tourism, authorities hope to ensure that both destinations remain healthy, resilient, and attractive for future generations of visitors. The initiative reflects the Philippines’ growing commitment to balancing tourism development with environmental sustainability and responsible ecosystem management.
