Thrissur, Kerala — The mimicry competition at the 64th State School Arts Festival showcased a remarkable shift in the art form, with young performers bringing emotional depth, creativity, and contemporary relevance to the stage, moving beyond traditional comedy and imitation.

Unlike earlier years where mimicry largely focused on light-hearted impersonations and slapstick humour, this year’s participants infused their acts with personal stories, social themes, and modern sounds. One standout performance by a Class VIII student from Kozhikode transformed a mimicry act into a deeply moving tribute to the victims of the Wayanad landslides, blending the sounds of rushing water, rescue operations, and hospital corridors. The emotional weight of this performance moved both judges and audience members, illustrating how young artists are using mimicry as a medium of expression rather than just entertainment.

Other performers incorporated modern elements like DJ beats, popular film references, and everyday urban sounds, energizing the traditional format. Some students recreated the acoustic landscape of contemporary life — from construction noise to cinematic background scores — while executing near-perfect voice modulations of well-known personalities. These fresh takes on mimicry resonated especially with younger audiences, reflecting how Kerala’s youth are reimagining classical art forms through a 21st-century lens.

Judges and cultural commentators at the festival noted that this evolution marks a significant generational shift, where storytelling, thematic depth, and relevance to current issues are valued alongside technical skill. The mimicry arena, once dominated by stereotypical voice imitations, is now embracing innovation and narrative complexity, giving hope that the art form will continue to evolve and stay meaningful for future generations of performers.

With nearly 15,000 students participating across various art disciplines, the State School Arts Festival continues to be a vibrant platform for nurturing young talent and preserving cultural creativity.
