Nepal’s interim government and top political leaders held a rare high-level meeting in Kathmandu this week in a bid to ease rising tensions and build consensus ahead of the general election scheduled for March 5, 2026. The talks were convened by interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, the country’s first female prime minister, and included senior figures from major parties such as Sher Bahadur Deuba, KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”.

The discussions focused on creating a “conducive environment” for the upcoming House of Representatives poll after months of political instability following mass Gen Z-led protests that toppled the previous government in September 2025. Leaders emphasized the importance of holding the election on the scheduled date and shoring up public confidence in Nepal’s democratic process.

President Ramchandra Paudel also participated in parts of the dialogue, urging unity among parties and underscoring the election as the nation’s best path to lasting stability. While differences remain on issues such as the reinstatement of the dissolved parliament, all sides agreed on the need to ensure security, transparency and fairness during the campaign period.

Political analysts say the talks signal a cautious but significant step toward dialogue amid deep public distrust and ongoing questions about the mandate of the interim government. News as reported.
