The Motor Vehicles Department in Kochi has taken strict action against 66 private buses found operating illegally or failing to meet safety standards during recent inspections. The move is part of an intensified enforcement drive to improve road safety and curb unregulated transport operations in the city and surrounding areas.

According to officials, teams from the MVD, working alongside traffic police, conducted surprise inspections of buses operating on various routes across Kochi. During these checks, authorities identified numerous violations including lack of valid permits, expired fitness certificates, deficient safety equipment, and failure to comply with seating capacity limits.

The penalised buses were issued fines and, in many cases, their operations were suspended immediately on the spot until proper documentation and corrective measures are presented. Drivers and bus owners were also instructed to appear before MVD authorities to address the infractions and regularise their vehicles.

Officials highlighted that the action reflects ongoing concerns about road safety, especially given the high volume of public transportation commuters in Kochi. Unsafe and unregulated buses contribute to accidents, traffic congestion, and increased risk for passengers — particularly during peak hours and long-distance travel.

Motor Vehicles Department representatives reiterated that private bus operators must adhere strictly to safety regulations and maintain necessary permits, insurance, and vehicle fitness certifications. They warned that continued non-compliance will result in heavier penalties, impoundment of vehicles, or even legal action under relevant motor vehicles laws.

Local commuters welcomed the enforcement action, noting that irresponsible operators have long been a concern, with frequent breakdowns and unsafe driving behaviour reported by passengers. Residents said they hope tougher regulation will lead to better accountability and safer bus travel in the city.

The MVD stated that such inspections will continue regularly as part of its mandate to ensure safer and more regulated road transport, with a focus on reducing accidents and protecting passenger welfare throughout Kochi and its suburbs.
