The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has ordered the blocking of the mobile application ‘Wingo’, citing its alleged involvement in large-scale fraudulent SMS activities that posed risks to public safety and digital security. The action forms part of the government’s broader crackdown on cyber fraud networks exploiting mobile platforms to deceive users across the country.

According to official sources, investigations revealed that the Wingo app was being misused to send bulk fraudulent text messages, including phishing links, fake offers, and impersonation messages designed to extract personal and financial information from unsuspecting citizens. These messages were reportedly linked to multiple complaints of online scams, financial losses, and identity theft.

The decision to block the app was taken under relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, following inputs from law enforcement and cybersecurity agencies. Authorities stated that the app’s technical infrastructure enabled masking of sender identities and bypassing standard telecom safeguards, making it easier for fraudsters to operate at scale.

The MHA emphasized that blocking Wingo is a preventive measure aimed at protecting citizens from cybercrime and restoring trust in digital communication systems. Telecom operators and internet service providers have been directed to ensure immediate compliance with the blocking order.

Cybersecurity experts have welcomed the move, noting that fraudulent SMS campaigns remain one of the most common entry points for digital scams. They have urged users to remain cautious, avoid clicking on unknown links, and report suspicious messages to cybercrime authorities.

The government reiterated its commitment to strengthening cybercrime detection, promoting digital awareness, and taking strict action against platforms that facilitate or fail to curb misuse of their services news as reported.
