TAPALPA, Mexico – New details are emerging about the final hideout of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, the feared leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), known as “El Mencho,” after he was killed last month during a Mexican military operation.

Mexican authorities discovered that El Mencho spent his last hours in a luxury two-storey villa in the exclusive Tapalpa Country Club, a gated community in the hills of Jalisco state. The villa — with stone walls, red tile roofing and modern interiors — showed signs of recent occupancy, including unmade beds, food containers, medicines and personal items, according to Reuters images from the scene.

Inside the compound, military investigators found religious artifacts such as a crucifix, votive candles and Catholic figurines, alongside a handwritten Psalm 91, suggesting the cartel leader might have relied on personal or symbolic faith in his final hours.

Authorities say the operation that located and ultimately led to the death of El Mencho began after Mexican military intelligence tracked a romantic partner to the villa, with U.S. intelligence support helping confirm his precise location. A fierce clash ensued between cartel gunmen and special forces, during which El Mencho was severely wounded and subsequently died while being flown to a hospital.

The discovery of the hideout and the nature of the items inside are now part of a continuing investigation into the notorious drug lord’s operations — and how his lethal downfall will affect organized crime dynamics in Mexico. news as reported
