Kochi police have arrested a man in connection with a daytime burglary in which gold jewelry was stolen from a locked house in the city. The accused was taken into custody following a detailed investigation, and the stolen ornaments have been successfully recovered, police officials said on Tuesday.
The theft occurred when the residents of the house were away during the day. Taking advantage of the absence, the accused allegedly broke into the locked residence and fled with gold jewelry kept inside. The house owner discovered the theft upon returning home and immediately lodged a complaint with the local police station.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation. Officers examined CCTV footage from nearby areas, collected technical evidence, and questioned suspects. These efforts led to the identification of the accused, who was later arrested from Kochi. During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the crime.
Police recovered the stolen gold jewelry from the accused’s possession. Officials stated that the recovery was made following sustained questioning and verification of information provided by the suspect. The recovered items will be returned to the rightful owner after completing legal procedures.
According to police sources, the accused has a criminal background and is suspected to be involved in similar theft cases in the region. Further investigation is underway to determine whether he has committed other burglaries and if any accomplices were involved.
Police have advised residents to take precautionary measures such as installing CCTV cameras, securing doors and windows properly, and informing neighbors or local authorities when leaving houses locked for extended periods. The swift arrest and recovery, police said, highlight their commitment to curbing property crimes and ensuring public safety in the city.
The accused has been produced before the court, and further legal action is in progress.
