Construction work for the major tunnel road project connecting Kozhikode and Wayanad has officially moved forward with the beginning of rock blasting activities. The project is considered one of the most important infrastructure developments in the state, aimed at improving road connectivity between the hilly region of Wayanad and the coastal district of Kozhikode.

The tunnel road project, known as the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi Tunnel Road Project, was launched by Pinarayi Vijayan with the first blasting ceremony marking the start of the construction phase. The project is estimated to cost around ₹2,134 crore and is expected to significantly improve transportation in the region.

The proposed project includes twin tunnels with a combined length of about 8.7 kilometers, which will connect Kozhikode and Wayanad more efficiently. At present, travelers between these districts depend mainly on the Thamarassery Ghat road, a winding mountain route that often experiences heavy traffic, landslides, and difficult driving conditions.

Once completed, the tunnel road is expected to reduce travel time between Kozhikode and Wayanad to around 10 minutes in certain sections, making transportation faster and safer for commuters and goods vehicles. The improved connectivity is also expected to boost tourism in Wayanad, which is a popular hill destination known for its natural beauty and wildlife attractions.

Officials have stated that the project will follow strict environmental guidelines to minimize ecological impact in the Western Ghats region. The government believes that the tunnel road will play a major role in strengthening regional development, improving transportation efficiency, and supporting economic growth in northern Kerala.

Construction activities will continue in phases as engineers and workers begin the excavation and tunnel development process.
