In a significant anti-narcotics operation near Perumbavoor on Thursday, Kerala police seized 51 kg of cannabis (ganja) hidden inside a rented house, leading to the arrest of a suspect believed to be part of a wider drug trafficking network.

Acting on a specific tip-off, officers from the Thadiyittaparambu Police conducted a raid at a property in Vazhakulam TMJ Nagar, a locality close to Perumbavoor. Law enforcement discovered the contraband packed in sacks and spread across the floor, along with an electronic weighing scale — typically used for measuring and distributing narcotics.

The main accused, 25-year-old Rubel Mulla, originally from Murshidabad in West Bengal, was arrested at the scene. The house where the cannabis was found had been rented under the pretext of providing accommodation for migrant workers, police said, and Mulla used this cover to store large quantities of the illegal drug.

Investigators noted that the suspect often visited the location at night and misled neighbours by claiming the occupants had gone to work during the day — a strategy that helped conceal the illegal activity for some time.

Officials believe the seizure represents one of the larger ganja busts in the Ernakulam district in recent months, reflecting intensified enforcement efforts against drug trafficking. Police have also indicated that this arrest may lead to further action against other individuals involved in the supply chain.

The successful operation highlights the continued focus of law enforcement agencies on dismantling narcotics distribution networks in and around Kochi’s suburban regions, with Perumbavoor emerging as a key area for such activities due to its busy transit routes and large transient population.
