The Maharashtra government has issued stop-work notices to a majority of construction sites found violating pollution control norms, intensifying efforts to curb rising air pollution levels. The action follows inspections by state pollution control authorities, which identified widespread non-compliance with dust mitigation and environmental safety standards.
Officials reported that several sites failed to install proper dust barriers, carry out regular water sprinkling, or cover construction materials and debris during transport. Authorities stressed that construction activities are a significant contributor to particulate matter pollution, especially in urban centres such as Mumbai and surrounding regions.
Developers have been directed to immediately implement mandatory measures, including anti-smog guns, green net coverings, wheel-washing facilities, and on-site waste management systems. Work will only resume after compliance verification by regulatory bodies.
