The Madras High Court has directed authorities to take strict action against illegal constructions that obstruct stormwater drains and natural waterways in Chennai. The court’s directive comes amid increasing concerns about urban flooding and poor drainage management across several parts of the city.
During a recent hearing, the court expressed serious concern over buildings and structures that have been constructed illegally on water channels, lakes, and stormwater drains. Judges observed that such encroachments significantly disrupt the natural flow of rainwater, increasing the risk of severe flooding during monsoon seasons.
The bench instructed the Greater Chennai Corporation and other civic authorities to identify unauthorized structures affecting drainage systems and initiate immediate removal or legal action against those responsible. Officials were also asked to submit status reports on measures taken to clear blockages in key drainage networks.
Authorities informed the court that several inspections are already underway to identify encroachments in flood-prone zones. The corporation has also been working to expand and improve stormwater drain infrastructure to manage heavy rainfall more effectively.
Urban planners and environmental experts have repeatedly warned that rapid urbanization and unauthorized construction near water bodies have worsened flooding in many parts of Chennai in recent years. They stress that protecting drainage channels and restoring natural waterways are essential steps to improve the city’s resilience to extreme weather events.
The court emphasized that strict enforcement of building regulations and environmental protection laws is necessary to prevent further encroachments. Officials have been urged to take coordinated action to ensure that drainage systems remain clear and functional, particularly ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. News as Reported.
