Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah, a senior leader with more than three decades of association with the Indian National Congress, has formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as political realignments intensify ahead of the Assam Assembly elections. Borah’s induction took place on February 22, 2026, at a programme held at the BJP’s state headquarters in Guwahati, in the presence of senior leaders including Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia and others.

Borah, who served two terms as an MLA from the Bihpuria constituency (2006–2016) and led the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee from 2021 to 2025, officially resigned from the Congress earlier this month after expressing dissatisfaction with the party’s internal functioning and leadership dynamics. He cited interference by senior party members and a lack of response to his concerns as key factors behind his decision to leave.

The veteran politician’s switch to the BJP was followed by several other former Congress leaders and workers joining the saffron party, signalling possible shifts in Assam’s political landscape just weeks before the state goes to polls. Upon his induction, Borah stated that his political journey continues with renewed purpose, and the BJP welcomed him as part of its broader strategy ahead of the elections.

Congress leaders attempted to retain him, with senior figures visiting his residence and engaging in discussions, but Borah ultimately chose to align with the ruling party. His move is seen as a notable development in the unfolding electoral battle in Assam news as reported.
