Members of the local fishing community staged a protest outside the port office in Kochi, raising concerns over declining fish prices and increasing marine pollution that they say is threatening their livelihoods.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, fishermen from coastal areas gathered near the administrative office of the port authority, demanding immediate government intervention. They alleged that middlemen and fluctuating market conditions have led to a sharp drop in the prices offered for their daily catch, making it difficult to sustain their families amid rising fuel and maintenance costs.
Protesters also highlighted growing environmental concerns, pointing to oil spills, industrial discharge, and plastic waste in coastal waters. According to the demonstrators, pollution has contributed to reduced fish availability and declining catch quality, further impacting income.
Representatives of fishermen’s unions submitted a memorandum to port officials, calling for stricter enforcement of environmental norms, regular monitoring of water quality, and action against polluting vessels or industries operating near the harbour. They also urged authorities to establish a minimum support price mechanism for certain fish varieties to stabilise earnings.
Port officials acknowledged receipt of the memorandum and assured that concerns would be forwarded to higher authorities for review. They stated that discussions with fisheries and environmental departments may be initiated to address the issues raised.
The protest remained largely peaceful, with police present to maintain order. Fishermen leaders warned that if their demands are not addressed within a reasonable timeframe, larger demonstrations could follow.
The incident has drawn attention to the broader challenges faced by coastal communities in balancing economic survival with environmental sustainability, especially in rapidly developing port cities like Kochi.
