The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged protests across parts of Kerala on Tuesday, criticising the state budget and alleging that its announcements were designed to mislead voters ahead of the upcoming elections. Party leaders claimed the budget relied heavily on “pre-election promises” without addressing Kerala’s core economic and development challenges.
In Kochi and other major cities, BJP workers organised demonstrations accusing the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of prioritising publicity-driven schemes over fiscal discipline. Protesters argued that several budget proposals lacked clear funding roadmaps and were aimed at creating short-term political goodwill rather than long-term economic stability.
Local BJP leaders said the budget failed to adequately address unemployment, rising public debt, and the financial stress faced by small businesses. While allocations for sectors such as information technology, urban transport, and youth initiatives were highlighted by the government, the BJP contended that these measures were either recycled announcements or insufficient in scale to deliver meaningful impact.
“The budget is a collection of attractive promises made with elections in mind. There is little clarity on implementation, and no concrete plan to manage the state’s worsening financial position,” a senior BJP leader said during the protest. The party also criticised what it described as selective development, arguing that several regions and traditional sectors were overlooked.
The LDF government, however, dismissed the allegations, stating that the budget reflects a balanced approach to development, social welfare, and economic growth. Government representatives maintained that investments in infrastructure, technology, and employment generation were essential to strengthening Kerala’s economy and improving quality of life.
Political analysts noted that budget-related confrontations are expected to intensify as elections draw closer, with opposition parties using fiscal policy as a key battleground. They added that while the budget includes ambitious proposals, public perception will ultimately depend on how effectively these initiatives translate into on-ground results.
As political tempers rise, the Kerala budget has become a focal point of debate, setting the tone for a charged pre-election environment in the state.
