The long-awaited KSRTC bus terminal project in Ernakulam has been significantly scaled down following financial constraints faced by the transport corporation. Originally envisioned as a modern, multi-level terminal with commercial facilities, the revised plan now focuses on essential passenger amenities.

Officials confirmed that rising construction costs and limited funding forced authorities to rework the project scope. Features such as shopping complexes, office spaces, and large parking structures have been removed from the updated design.

The project, aimed at easing congestion and improving passenger experience, has faced multiple delays over the years. Commuters have expressed disappointment but say basic improvements are urgently needed given the current overcrowded conditions at existing terminals.

KSRTC officials stated that priority would be given to bus bays, waiting areas, sanitation facilities, and improved traffic flow. The revised project is expected to be completed in phases, depending on fund availability.

Urban planners note that while downsizing may reduce long-term revenue potential, completing a functional terminal is better than prolonged delays. They stress the importance of integrating the terminal with other transport modes.

Authorities hope that additional funding support in the future could allow expansion of facilities. For now, the focus remains on delivering a practical solution for daily commuters.
