In response to rising concerns over road accidents and pedestrian safety, the Kochi City Traffic Police have launched a comprehensive road safety awareness drive across major junctions and thoroughfares in the city. The initiative aims to educate motorists, pedestrians and public transport users about traffic regulations, safe driving behaviours, and the importance of obeying road rules to reduce collisions and save lives.

The drive includes on-ground campaigns where traffic police officers engage directly with drivers and commuters, distributing informational leaflets, conducting quick safety briefings, and demonstrating proper practices such as wearing helmets, using seat belts, and maintaining speed limits. Enhanced visibility at busy intersections also allows officers to answer public queries about road safety guidelines and raise awareness about common causes of accidents like distracted driving and reckless overtaking.

Officials have highlighted that Kochi’s growing urban population, combined with increased vehicle density and high pedestrian movement, requires proactive measures rather than reactive enforcement alone. The awareness drive is being carried out in coordination with local community groups and transport associations to broaden outreach and promote a culture of responsible road behaviour.

As part of the campaign, special sessions are also being organized for schoolchildren and young commuters to instil road safety habits early. Some programmes focus specifically on sensitising two-wheeler riders to the hazards of speeding and the importance of protective gear.

Traffic police officials emphasise that while enforcement of traffic laws will continue — including issuing fines for violations — education and awareness are key to long-term change. The department plans to keep the drive active through regular checkpoints and awareness stalls at strategic locations, particularly during peak hours and public holidays when road mishaps have historically spiked.

Authorities have also encouraged citizens to report unsafe road conditions and erratic driving via official helplines, reinforcing community participation as a vital part of the safety initiative.
