Kochi Corporation has approached authorities seeking exemption from the Model Code of Conduct to move forward with the Konthuruthy canal rehabilitation and eviction project. The request comes as election regulations currently restrict new administrative actions and development activities.
The Konthuruthy canal project is considered a crucial urban development initiative aimed at restoring the canal ecosystem, improving water flow, and addressing long-standing issues such as waterlogging and pollution. Officials have emphasized that delaying the project could worsen environmental concerns and hinder efforts to improve drainage infrastructure in the region.
The rehabilitation plan includes clearing encroachments along the canal, relocating affected residents as per rehabilitation policies, and undertaking scientific cleaning and restoration work. Authorities have stated that the project is essential not only for environmental reasons but also for flood mitigation, especially with the monsoon season approaching.
However, the implementation has been stalled due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct in view of the ongoing election process. Under these guidelines, new projects and policy decisions typically require special permission to proceed.
In its request, the Corporation has highlighted the urgency of the situation, arguing that the project is a public necessity rather than a new policy initiative. Officials have assured that all rehabilitation measures will be carried out in a fair and transparent manner, ensuring that affected residents are provided with appropriate support.
The proposal has sparked discussions among residents and civic groups, with some expressing concern over the eviction process, while others have welcomed the move as a long-overdue step toward urban improvement.
Authorities are now awaiting approval from the Election Commission. If granted, work on the canal rehabilitation project is expected to begin soon, marking a significant step toward improving Kochi’s urban infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
